A Whisky Lover’s Dream

Gerston Distillery was located in the village of Halkirk in Caithness, in the Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1796, the original Gerston distillery was a small-scale, traditional Highland whisky distillery. It built a solid reputation for producing high-quality single malt whisky and enjoyed popularity across the UK and even with notable figures such as Sir Robert Peel and the King of Holland. The distillery remained in family hands (the Swanson family) for much of its existence. However, by 1875, changes in the whisky industry and increasing competition led to its closure.

A new distillery—sometimes referred to as Gerston II—was established in 1886 near the original site by new owners hoping to revive the Gerston name. Unfortunately, it failed to replicate the success of its predecessor and ceased production by 1911.

After the distillery's final closure, most of the buildings associated with both the old and new Gerston distilleries were demolished. Today, our house stands on the site where the original Gerston distillery once operated in Halkirk.

While no distillery structures remain, the house is a quiet reminder of the area's distilling heritage. It is not an official historical site, but for whisky historians and enthusiasts, it marks a spot of interest in Scotland’s rich whisky-making past.
